What Kind Of Netting Do I Need?

The best netting for baseball batting cages will rely upon what you are intending to use your cage for. For each different application, there is netting that is more appropriate than others.

    Building a home batting cage?

Then you’ll want to know about the differences between baseball nets and basketball nets, as well as the potential considerations involved with each one.

There are three different styles of the net that you could use in your batting cage or baseball netting system.

The one that is most commonly used for home batting cages is the basketball style, which features 3-inch square holes. This is also known as diamond-mesh netting. It has a number of benefits when it comes to safety & security, ease of installation, and durability.

In the early 1980s, a different type of netting was being used for batting cages that are now referred to as MLB/Professional Batting Cage Netting. This style features much larger 9-inch square holes and also has a number of benefits. The one drawback of this type of baseball netting system is its reduced level of safety & security.

The third type of batting cage netting that is available is called the Baseball/Softball Batting Cage Net. It can be used in all applications, even though it was developed for softball use. This netting has 6-inch round holes and serves as a compromise between the two other styles. It is more expensive than the diamond-mesh but offers greater safety & security, as well as improved durability.

What Size Baseball Netting Do I Need?

The size of your batting cage will make a difference with the size of baseball netting you purchase. The larger your batting cage or net system, the more coverage it will need.

Consequently, if your home batting cage is very large, you’ll want to use a larger net such as 9-inch square holes. On the other hand, the smaller your home batting cage is – such as a portable system that folds up and is only 8 feet square – then the smaller 7-inch or 6-inch square holes will suffice.

What Thickness Of Baseball Netting Should I Get?

The twine diameter of the batting cage net, known as the netting’s thickness, is measured in millimeters.

Every gauge is identified by a number. The bigger the number, the thicker the twine diameter, and the longer your net will last.

The most popular materials for backyard nets are #36 Nylon and #36 Poly. In fact, over 75% of all nets used by high schools are made of #36 Nylon, as well as over 80% of backyards. For commercial spaces, we suggest using #60 Nylon.

What Is The Best Baseball Netting For Indoor Use?

Indoor nets don’t have to deal with the weather, which provides them extra protection from ball impact. However, they do need specialized hardware for installation.

There are three types of netting that are used in indoor applications:

    • Standard Nylon – This is the most common material used for an indoor batting cage. If you’re looking to practice your swing in the comfort of home, this type of batting cage net will keep your baseballs contained while allowing you to continue with your daily workout routine.
    • Premium Nylon – This kind of indoor batting cage net features higher quality nylon and is much more resilient than the standard variety. It comes with a higher price tag, but it’s well worth the investment in these types of nets when you consider how much better they hold up to heavy use.
    • Polyethylene Netting – The poly e-netting is a high-grade net designed for long-term use. This type of batting cage net will last the longest in an indoor batting cage setting, without sagging or losing its shape. It’s also incredibly waterproof and able to withstand a lot more abuse than either nylon option.

What Is The Best Baseball Netting For Outdoor Use?

Outdoor batting cage nets are made of polyester, which gives them durability and moisture resistance against UV radiation and dampness. You may extend the life of your batting cage net by cleaning it regularly. Water-resistant netting for outdoor batting cages should be cleaned after every use.

However, you need to take special care when cleaning an outdoor batting cage net because the material is stronger and more durable than indoor nets. The baseballs can cause friction on the mesh when they hit it, causing mildew and tears if it isn’t cleaned right away. If this happens frequently, your batting cage net may become too damaged to use.
